Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight forgives $212 million in medical debt, prompting big economic growth even greater than that of MLB tourism

Instead of engaging in political finger-pointing over MLB’s decision to move All-Star Game from Georgia, Stacey Abrams’ led Fair Fight to relieve medical debt and jumpstart economic growth in Georgia.

After clinching the National League pennant and a spot in the World Series, the Atlanta Braves will be hosting Games 3 and in Truist Park, spurring economic activity in the state over the weekend for hardworking Georgians.

This is Major League Baseball’s first national event in Atlanta since the league decided to move the MLB All-Star Game from the city to boycott Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans’ voter suppression laws. The lost revenue for Atlanta and Georgia totaled $100 million.

Despite Stacey Abrams and other Georgians’ encouragement to keep the game in Georgia, MLB leadership refused, saying that doing so would support the GOP’s voter suppression laws and compromise league values.

“Like many Georgians, I am disappointed that the MLB is relocating the All-Star Game; however, I commend the players, owners, and League commissioner for speaking out,” Abrams said.  “I urge others in positions of leadership to do so as well. As I have stated I respect boycotts, although I don’t want to see Georgia families hurt by lost events and jobs.”

Now Governor Kemp has taken the World Series as a new opportunity for cheap political finger-pointing, blaming Stacey Abrams for the lost All-Star Game. Meanwhile, Stacey Abrams continues proving how much she cares about Georgia’s families by looking for new ways to generate sustainable economic growth that far outlasts one baseball game.

Her organization, Fair Fight, bought $212 million in medical debt in Georgia, Louisiana,Arizona, Alabama, and Mississippi—$123 million of that in the state of Georgia. This buy forgave the debts of 68,685 Georgians, giving the state it’s single biggest economic boost in years.

Debt cancellation has been proven to spur economic growth through increased consumer spending, creation of new businesses, and local investments. This act of debt forgiveness will go a long way in increasing economic opportunities for those who need it most.

Chop on, Atlanta!
